One Brooklyn Health System | Brookdale Hospital Behavioral Health Units
Array worked with One Brooklyn Health to transform two medical acute care units at Brookdale Hospital into modern adult inpatient behavioral health units. The phased renovation delivers 25,000 SF of therapeutic space across the 5th and 6th floors of the Aaron Building, designed to prioritize patient dignity, staff visibility, and safety.
This phased interior renovation converted outdated medical units into safe, welcoming behavioral health environments designed to promote healing and reduce stigma. The units are organized into three zones—patient bedrooms, activity areas, and staff support zones—each arranged for efficient observation and therapeutic engagement.
Design strategies focused heavily on safety and visibility. Ligature-resistant fixtures, barricade-resistant finishes, and strategic spatial planning reduce risk while eliminating blind corners. Centralized nursing cores allow for continuous staff observation into activity zones, which are arranged for day programming and quiet therapy.
The design leverages natural light, color, and expansive floor plates to create a sense of openness and calm. Patient lounges along exterior walls maximize daylight, while visual connections to art and communal spaces establish an uplifting, non-institutional atmosphere. With the integration of these strategies, the renovation promotes a therapeutic environment for both patients and care teams.
