The Story

Mercy Health envisioned a new inpatient behavioral health facility that balances safety, therapeutic value, and operational efficiency. Designed to replace a decades-old structure, the new building is home to 90 beds across six adult psychiatric units. A key objective was to create a more healing, humanized environment for care delivery while enabling visibility, flexibility, and collaboration for care teams.

Each unit is designed with interior courtyards that bring daylight deep into the building, providing calming visual access to nature. Staff and public areas are discretely zoned to ensure patient safety and privacy, while amenity spaces such as exercise rooms and multipurpose gathering areas foster community and movement. The centralized nurse stations and open dayrooms foster connection between patients and care teams.
