Northwell Health | Zucker Hillside Hospital
Northwell Health partnered with Array and Ennead Architects to create a 139,000 SF replacement hospital for Zucker Hillside, supporting adolescent, adult, and geriatric psychiatric care in a safe, compassionate, and healing-focused environment.
Zucker Hillside Hospital is nationally recognized for its pioneering work in psychiatric care. Its aging facility could no longer support the high standards of compassionate, safe, and evidence-based care required for today’s patients. Northwell turned to Array and Ennead Architects to design a new behavioral health facility from the ground up.
To serve three distinct populations—adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients—the design integrates a universal unit model with thoughtful separations for safety and privacy. An innovative corridor layout delineates staff, visitor, and patient pathways to reduce risk and enhance dignity.
Large-scale art, natural light, and warm, calming materials reinforce the therapeutic environment. The adolescent unit features dedicated outdoor space, classrooms, and quiet areas; geriatric units are designed with fall prevention and ambulation in mind. Despite a two-year pause between design and construction, close collaboration preserved the project’s vision and budget.
