NewYork-Presbyterian | Och Spine / The Spiral
This HCD Showcase Award of Merit Winner unites Columbia, Weill Cornell, and NewYork-Presbyterian in a 55,000 SF destination for coordinated, patient-centered spine care.
Located in Hudson Yards, the project represents a high-visibility expansion of the Och Spine brand and a strategic investment in next-generation musculoskeletal care. The design reflects a system-wide commitment to comfort, clarity, and clinical excellence.
Och Spine at The Spiral was conceived as both a healing environment and an architectural benchmark. With patients navigating complex diagnoses and multi-step treatment journeys, the team prioritized seamless navigation and calming experiences from the moment of arrival.
To serve the needs of three leading academic institutions in a shared space, the design balances institutional identity with unified brand expression. Dedicated entry zones for Columbia, Weill Cornell, and NYP maintain individual recognition, while shared clinical zones and patient lounges offer clarity and cohesion. Every element—from light-filled waiting areas and warm materials to concierge-inspired changing rooms—aims to ease patient anxiety and promote comfort. Behind the scenes, a decentralized care team model reduces staff travel distances, improves visibility, and increases collaboration across disciplines.
Design Insight
Working within a multi-tenant commercial tower presented unique challenges—from rigid base building infrastructure to strict MEP coordination and site access limitations. With Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) as the base building architect, expectations for design excellence were high.
To maintain design intent under real-world constraints, Array maintained strong site presence, coordinated closely with building management, and adapted rapidly to evolving field conditions. Penetrations through the tower’s shear walls, integration of healthcare-grade systems, and phased occupancy all required precision planning.
Despite the complexity of integrating healthcare into an active commercial tower, the project was delivered on schedule and under budget—an achievement made possible by agile collaboration and an unwavering commitment to the client’s vision.
