The Story

As the flagship hospital of NewYork-Presbyterian’s Columbia campus, the Milstein Tower was due for a transformation to match its leading clinical programs and meet the demands of modern care delivery. Array led a multi-phase renovation that touched 10 inpatient units and 394 beds, integrating updated best practices without interrupting operations.

Working closely with NYP leadership, clinicians, and operations teams, Array developed a patient unit template that could be refined and tailored to each floor over time. As units were phased, lessons learned informed real-time updates—a cycle that allowed the final units to be constructed in just six months, down from the original 10-month target.

In addition to architectural and interior upgrades, the project tackled systemic infrastructure challenges and regulatory hurdles. NYP leveraged Array’s deep familiarity with the building to manage code compliance through strategic phasing and variance extensions. The design also featured enhanced arrival sequences and intuitive wayfinding, aided by signature art elements, decentralized nurse stations, and upgraded toilet rooms.

The result is a safer, more navigable, and efficient care environment that advances both staff performance and patient satisfaction.
