Children’s National Medical Center | Behavioral Health Unit
Children’s National Hospital sought to elevate the standard of behavioral healthcare for children and adolescents through a transformative renovation of their behavioral health unit.
Children’s National Hospital engaged Array to renovate a 14,000 SF inpatient behavioral health unit designed to serve children and adolescents with behavioral, emotional, and developmental disorders. The project created separate child and adolescent care areas while maintaining built-in flexibility, including 23 beds and five flex beds to accommodate census swings. Phased construction allowed the unit to remain operational throughout the renovation.
The design supports a multidisciplinary care model by co-locating staff support and treatment planning areas, while private and semi-private rooms provide options for comfort, safety, and family involvement. Multipurpose rooms support meals, teaching, therapy, and organized exercise, while sensory features, respite areas, and restorative spaces help patients feel secure and engaged throughout treatment. Designed to meet LEED Silver standards, the renovation was recognized with a 2019 Healthcare Design Magazine Remodel Renovation Competition Silver Award.
