The Story

Penn State’s flagship medical center needed a facility that would reflect its dual role as a community hospital and academic teaching institution. The result was a new Cancer Institute with integrated research, treatment, and support functions. The building co-locates researchers, physicians, and clinicians to encourage collaboration and accelerate innovation in care delivery.

The project also incorporated the Oncology Treatment Building—originally a temporary facility—into the final design. Both buildings are interconnected with the main hospital and the Children’s Hospital via multiple bridges, ensuring continuity of care across campus.

Through thoughtful planning and programming, the facility includes not only state-of-the-art clinical services, but also holistic amenities to support patients and their families—ranging from healing gardens to a boutique, classrooms, and a resource library.
