MUSC Health Leatherman Behavioral Care Pavilion
A scalable behavioral health campus that integrates crisis, inpatient, and outpatient services in a therapeutic, stigma-sensitive environment designed to support patient autonomy, operational efficiency, and future growth.
To expand behavioral health services in the Pee Dee region, MUSC engaged Array to develop a design concept for a new facility on its Florence campus, grounded in best practices and person-centered care. The plan emphasized flexibility for future expansion, cost-effective regional materials, and environments that support patient choice and independence. Advancing into full design, the Jean and Hugh K. Leatherman Pavilion will provide a comprehensive mix of triage, crisis stabilization, telehealth, outpatient, and inpatient services for adults and adolescents. The layout promotes therapeutic flexibility through private unit gardens, off-unit treatment areas, and courtyards designed for a range of activities. Separate crisis units enable rapid stabilization, while inpatient areas support more acute care needs. A discreet patient intake is paired with a welcoming public entrance to reduce stigma and improve flow. Centralized amenity and treatment spaces—including therapy, recreation, and staff areas—are organized around an activity mall to enhance care continuity. Structural and MEP systems are designed to support seamless future expansion.
